How to Create Quality Social Media Videos from Home

If content is king (and if you’re reading this, you know that it is), video is the crown prince of social media. Video is engaging and fills your channel with shareable content that captures your audience’s attention. The best part? You don’t need expensive equipment to get started. Here’s how to jumpstart your video marketing program from home.

Make a Plan

Determine an outline for your video. What do you want your audience’s takeaway to be? Does your video have a clear beginning, middle, and end? How long will it be? What platform will you be posting on? You don’t have to memorize a script, but the road to your finished video will be much smoother if you have an idea of what you need to say before you start.

Gather Your Equipment

Reading this on your smartphone? Perfect. The ideal tool for recording your video is already in the palm of your hand. Your phone’s camera app is more than capable of producing footage that you can be proud of, but if you have a little camera knowledge and you want more control, there are plenty of apps that can give you just that. Filmic Pro has long been a favorite of smartphone cinematographers on both iOS and Android devices, while Movie Pro for iOS and Camera MX for Android provide similar control with less overwhelming interfaces.

Find Your Location

The topic of your video will go a long way in helping you determine where to shoot it. Recording a cooking tutorial? Head to the kitchen. Sharing some business tips with your followers? Let them see you in your home office. When in doubt, find a solid background – any plain wall, table, or hanging bed sheet will do.

Wherever you shoot, make sure there is plenty of bright light available and little unnecessary clutter in frame. Place your phone on a steady surface to record. Dimly lit spaces, cluttered surroundings, and shaky camera movements can all detract from the subject of your video.

Edit the Final Product

If you only need to trim the ends of your video and add an interesting filter, all of your editing can likely be accomplished in your smartphone’s native photo and video app. If you have a more complex vision for your video, you may need to download an additional editing app. Quik is free for iOS and Android and does the trick for most basic edits. If you want to add more flair to your final product, you’ll be more satisfied with Adobe Rush or InShot.

As with any content creation, make sure you’re sharing what makes you unique! Now open up your camera app. It’s time to create video content your audience will love.
