After months of speculation, Instagram finally hid like counts off of posts, Facebook has erased billions of fake accounts, and Twitter turns to Topics. These are some of the trending stories making news in social media this week.
Fake Facebook Accounts
This year, Facebook has been cracking down on removing fake accounts on its platform. According to CNN, “As much as 5% of its monthly user base of nearly 2.5 billion consists of fake accounts.” So far, the platform has been able to shut down 5.4 billion fake accounts this year compared to 3.3 billion they removed last year.
This is a great move because it ensures that users have more authentic interactions on the platform.
IG Hides Likes
Influencers and others have been nervously watching for this move, and Instagram finally fulfilled its promise to hide like counts from posts. According to Business Insider, Instagram is hiding likes to promote the health and well-being of its users by allowing them to feel like they have the freedom to post what they want without being judged.
With this change, you will still be able to see the likes of your own personal posts. However, you will not be able to see how many likes the posts in your newsfeed are getting.
Will this stop you from using Instagram?
Twitter’s Topics
When there is a buzz about a product or service, many fans will go to Twitter to express their opinions. Now, Twitter is implementing a new feature called Topics. Once you find a topic of interest, you can search for it and then follow it to be able to see what everyone has to say about it. The algorithm allows you to see top tweets from experts and others that post about the subject matter constantly.
Instagram is currently hiding like counts and video views in seven countries.
