highlightThis week, we learn how much time teens really spend on their mobile devices, how much Instagram cares about their users, and what LinkedIn has planned for their new updates.

Confirmed! Teens Commit to YouTube

Most people assume that younger generations are obsessed with computers, smartphones, and social media. Well, now it’s confirmed! According to a survey released by Common Sense Media, children between the ages of 8-12 spend about 5 hours a day looking at a smartphone or computer, while teens between the ages of 13-18 spend over 7 hours a day looking at a screen. Researchers also found that this time does not include homework or school! To be even more specific, 53% of tweens are using most of their screen-time to watch videos on YouTube. Remember this data when considering which platforms and demographics to utilize for your digital marketing strategy.

Instagram Walks the Walks

Over the past few months, Instagram has been taking small steps to improve the safety of its users. This month, Instagram announced, “We will no longer allow fictional depictions of self-harm or suicide on Instagram, such as drawings or memes or content from films or comics that use graphic imagery.” They will “remove other imagery that may not show self-harm or suicide, but does include associated materials or methods.” These updates make the platform safer for users of all ages and help viewers feel more comfortable.

LinkedIn Looks out for Employees

LinkedIn has a few new updates that will help companies highlight their employees and allow employees to be more involved with the company’s content. It’s a win, win! These updates include:

  • Employee Notifications – Admins of a company page can now alert employees when they create important posts.
  • Kudos and Team Moments – This feature allows page admins to highlight important moments within the company such as new team member spotlights, work achievements, employee milestones, and much more.
  • Completion Meter – Similar to the personal account meters, this feature helps company pages fully utilize all of LinkedIn’s available features. LinkedIn stated, “Complete LinkedIn Pages generate 30% more page views per week compared to incomplete LinkedIn Pages”.
