The “flow” of your Instagram feed can make or break your account. You might be posting great content, with tons of original, beautiful photography but if you don’t present your content correctly, your feed could just end up looking cluttered and uncoordinated.

Take a look around Instagram and you’ll notice that the most popular accounts all have a very distinctive look and feel that not only creates a strong sense of brand identity but also is visually harmonious and balanced.  To accomplish this Insta-zen, here are some tips to take into consideration:

Choose a color palette and stick with it.

When choosing photos for your Instagram account, try and stick to no more than three or four key colors for your content and stick to them. For example, if you’re a surf brand, you’ll probably want to incorporate lots of ocean blues and sea greens. The colors you choose should complement your brand’s logo, products, and packaging.

Leave your content room to “breathe”.

Never underestimate the power of a little bit of blank space.  Square format photography lends itself to looking crowded, especially when Instagram stacks images on top of and next to each other in your feed. Choose some images that have empty space in them to visually break up your content; this could be sky, white background in memes, or choosing a photo where your subject is very small and surrounded by a simple backdrop.

Choose reoccurring themes for the type of content you post.

While Instagram is all about authenticity and a great place to showcase your creative side with your content, it’s a good idea to come up with certain types of posts that will serve as the core of your content and “anchor” your look. Think of these things as the favorite jeans of your Instagram account; they look good with everything, they always fit, and they never go out of style. These posts could be anything from professional photos of all your products taken with the same backdrop, to a black and white quote that you post every Friday. As your audience scrolls through your feed, they’ll feel a sense of continuity that they’ll associate with your brand identity.

Achieving Instagram Nirvana takes a little bit of practicing and planning, but paying attention to these tips will help ensure that your feed is both interesting and visually appealing.
