How to Disconnect in a Connected World

We are always on and always connected. Whether it’s at work responding to hundreds of emails or streaming our latest binge-worthy show, we are constantly connected. The internet has become one of the essentials of surviving in the world today. It’s almost as important as the air we breathe and the water we drink. So, how do we disconnect? Really? Taking time for ourselves isn’t easy, but we have to do it regularly to keep up in today’s society.

The first step to solving any problem is recognizing there is a problem. Disconnecting is easier when you plan time to do just that, disconnect. It sounds silly to plan 15-minute increments throughout your day to go without the internet, but it’s necessary. Start small and try planning four 15-minute breaks to reflect. Whether it’s doing yoga, tai chi, or a quick deep breathing exercise, it will all add up to make a difference.

Most of us are busy adults trying to balance everything with what feels like no time at all. First, recognize if you’re a morning or night person and gear your activities accordingly. If you know you won’t get up before the sun, maybe scheduling a 15-minute morning yoga session isn’t the best idea. You should actually accomplish the task instead of  hitting the snooze button for the fifth time.

If you’re like me, you’re most alert around the afternoon to evening time frame. Choose a specific time and activity every day and select an accountability partner. Just so you know, an accountability partner is someone who holds you accountable for the goals you set for yourself. Sometimes it’s hard to do it alone and it helps to have a helping hand. My coworkers are my accountability partners, and they are most helpful when I’m trying something new. Try this schedule for one week and switch up the activities to keep it fresh. You will see a change in your mood and body that you won’t regret.

Here at KWSM, we work hard for our clients, but we also realize taking small breaks throughout the day helps optimize our work performance. Last week, my CE teammates and I engaged in a steps challenge during our breaks where we competed to see who could take the most steps in 15-minutes. It was fun and it got everyone up and moving. Now, I lost the challenge, but I realized it gave me more energy and a burst of endorphins from bonding with my coworkers. This was small, but it meant a lot. Everyone has a hobby that interests them and doesn’t involve connecting to the nearest WiFi signal. Try that! Don’t be afraid to disconnect in a connected world.
