What is Your Social Media Plan Trying to Accomplish?

Our friends at Reuters posted an article entitled, Add structure to your Social Media plan.  That is indeed a fabulous plan.  If you were building a deck you wouldn’t just purchase 2 x 4s and a bucket of screws would you?  Well, I hope not, but if you do we’ll refrain from attending your next cookout.    You need a plan for a deck and you need a plan for your social media plan.

What are you trying to accomplish with your social media?  Yeah, you want a facebook page and maybe some tweets, but what are you trying to accomplish?

A social media plan is a long distance race, not a sprint.  There are untold numbers of people online who are talking about your company, industry, hobby, passion or even you.   That is what is so great about a carefully thought out social media plan.

Social media is a 20 headed creature that can speak dozens of different languages.  Twitter speaks to folks a certain way, Linkedin is its suit & tie friend, YouTube is the shiny video object that distracts people and Yelp is more than what you do when you stub your toe on furniture.  These are just 4 of the endless channels that exist in the nebulous world of “Social Media” and you need a plan.

The point.  It’s not as simple as putting up a facebook page and watch as (insert goal here) happens by the next major holiday.    Even if (insert goal here) happens, the online community will still be talking about your company, industry, hobby, passion or even you.

You know that acquaintance that only contacts you when they want something?  Doing social media without a plan is like that acquaintance; it seems unfocused, scatterbrained and insincere.  That’s not the way you conduct yourself or your social media, is it?  Just like Hannibal in the A-Team, we love it when a plan comes together.
