What Is All The Noise About Podcasts?

You don’t have to work in digital marketing to know about podcasts. In it’s simplest form, a podcast is an episodic series of digital audio files which a user can download and listen. With platforms like Apple, Google Play, and Spotify, podcasts have made their way into many of our daily lives. We can stream them at home or on the go. It’s easy to listen at work, in the car, or even at the gym. Yes, I listen to podcasts while I workout.

How It Works

You can download your favorite podcast off of many sites. Apple users can download them via the Podcast app and Android users can get theirs through Google Play. There are also sites like Spotify and Soundcloud you can source these recordings. Podcasts have been around longer than you think; they date back 30-years, but then were known as audio blogs. As the smartphone became the norm in society, podcasts really began to take off in the mid-2000s. Journalists, DJs, and musical artists helped grow the trend. An example of a popular podcast is Serial, an investigative journalism series hosted by Sarah Koenig. This narrated nonfiction story over multiple episodes debuted in December of 2015. Today, people from all walks of life podcast about every nearly topic. They can include interviews, fictional stories, behind the scenes series, and much more.

How To Use It For Your Business

More brands are getting into the podcast game. Why? Podcasts offer hosts a chance to show off their authority on a subject. We recommend starting off slow – maybe a weekly or a monthly podcast of about 30-minutes. As you grow more comfortable, you can begin to expand your frequency and length. Not ready to try your hand at podcasting, but want to capitalize on the craze? Brands are taking advantage of the ads embedded within a podcast. Some businesses also sponsor podcasts. Why? Almost everyone has access to them, you can reach an on-the-go audience, listening is generally done more than reading, and it’s just easier.

If you do decide to start a podcast, make sure you maximize its power by using it on social media and turn the content into blog content. Also, if you aren’t camera shy, put it on video and upload it to YouTube.
