It’s safe to say, we’d all love a beautiful smile with pearly whites. If you search on Amazon right now, you can buy an alarming amount of professional-grade dental equipment with absolutely no medical license required. Beyond the cosmetic tools, you can easily purchase temporary fillings and glass ionomer cements designed to glue a crown back into place.
While the temptation to build a DIY Dentistry kit may be alluring, I’m not doing this work to save a few thousand dollars on a dental bill. While the tools themselves are incredibly powerful and effective, in the hands of a novice trying to bypass a professional, they can cause irreparable harm.
So, how is dentistry like digital marketing?
As the VP of Strategy and Client Relations at KWSM, I see business owners making this dangerous calculation with AI. They see the accessibility of generative AI platforms and view them as a cheap, immediate replacement for a comprehensive marketing strategy. But implementing a generic AI strategy is just as dangerous as taking a high-speed drill to your own teeth.
The Real Cost of an AI Marketing Strategy
To understand why this DIY approach is so dangerous, we have to look at the current market conditions.
The external problem facing mid-market and enterprise companies today is the sheer volume of digital noise. Because generative AI has made content creation virtually free, the internet is flooded with generic, automated marketing materials. Your buyers are overwhelmed with robotic email pitches, soulless LinkedIn posts, and zero-click search results. Standing out requires deep, proprietary insights that a machine simply cannot generate on its own.
This environment creates a severe internal problem for leadership teams. Executives are feeling immense pressure to reduce operational costs, making the prospect of an AI-generated strategy highly tempting. At the same time, they possess a nagging anxiety that their marketing is losing its unique voice and failing to generate qualified leads. They are frustrated because they know they need to modernize, but they are terrified of making a strategic misstep that burns their domain reputation or alienates their target audience.
Philosophically, I believe it is a massive injustice to risk the livelihood of your business and the jobs of your employees on generic best practices hallucinated by an algorithm. Your brand was built on real relationships, specific expertise, and unique value propositions. It is fundamentally wrong to hand the strategic steering wheel over to a machine that has never once spoken to your customers.
The Tale of Two Strategies
The reality of this danger became incredibly apparent during a recent evaluation with a prospective client. This prospect was deciding between investing in a comprehensive digital strategy developed by our team at KWSM, and a strategy generated entirely by an AI platform that they had prompted internally to save money.
When my team builds a digital marketing strategy, we do not guess, and we do not rely on generic industry assumptions. We build a highly customized roadmap based on interviews, research and real feedback.
For example, when we developed the strategy for a premier provider of flexible workspaces, our deliverables included a deep Target Audience Exploration, a Current Marketing Audit, a Competitor Analysis, and comprehensive Brand Messaging Development. Most importantly, we conducted Voice of Customer interviews. We actually spoke to their clients to understand why they chose the client over a massive corporate coworking space.
Because we did the human work of interviewing real people, our strategy for this prospect was incredibly precise. We did not just suggest running generic office space ads. We developed specific campaigns targeting specific professionals, relying on case studies of similar professionals who need some of the same offerings.
We built an outbound Account-Based Marketing plan utilizing IP detection to identify the specific companies visiting the website, allowing the sales team to follow up with tailored case study one-sheets. We also mapped out a Nearbound strategy focused on leveraging reputation management and strategic partnerships.
The prospect who was evaluating our services showed us the internal AI document they produced, and it was the marketing equivalent of a DIY root canal.
The Missing Human Element
The AI document was three pages. It consisted of a rough outline of what the business should do over the next 12 months. There were blogs and emails, but those tactics don’t really address how to create an experience for prospective clients.
What the AI strategy completely missed was the soul of the business.
They would have gotten more out of talking to a marketer standing behind them in line at Starbucks.
AI is brilliant at generating text, but it has no concept of operational reality, budgeting, or basic business logic. When we reviewed the AI’s 12-month strategy, the glaring omissions were immediately obvious:
- Undefined Lead Targets: Despite stating its primary purpose was to consistently deliver sales-qualified leads, the AI left the actual lead targets blank, stating only that they needed to be “reset to fund” the revenue goal.
- Misaligned Timelines: The AI built a roadmap that planned to launch the company’s lead-generation engines in Q1, but it completely failed to align this with internal capacity, scheduling the hire of the actual sales representative needed to run those engines for Q2.
- Brainstorming Masked as Strategy: Instead of making definitive choices, the AI presented mutually exclusive ideas—like expanding the scope of their current SEO partner while simultaneously suggesting they switch to a completely new, exclusive partner—leaving the executive team with a menu of choices rather than a finalized direction.
- Unfunded Mandates: The document instructed the company to create vertical cornerstone content by outsourcing to an expert, but it provided no budget allocation or subject matter guidance to make it happen.
AI cannot pick up the phone and interview a client about their pain points. There was no alignment with the company’s actual sales capacity. AI only understood passive, top-of-funnel inbound marketing and it likely suggested superficial tactics that looked professional on paper but had no connection to the actual operational reality of generating revenue or landing high-quality prospects.
Designing a Strategy That Drives Revenue
The biggest thing to remember about AI is that what you supply to it dictates exactly what you get out of it. If you do not perform the rigorous, human-led brand discovery process, and if you do not feed the machine real feedback from actual customers, AI will only spit out generic best practices. It will give you a strategy designed generically for a hypothetical company that does not exist, competing in a market devoid of actual human nuance.
AI is an incredible collaborative partner in the digital marketing strategy process. My team and I use it daily to process vast amounts of data, analyze competitive landscapes, and streamline our research. But it requires intense strategic direction and highly specific prompting based on a deep, human understanding of how a brand needs to position itself. We match that human understanding with the specific tactical execution required to drive measurable results.
The tools to automate your marketing are readily available, just like the dental tools on Amazon. But using them without the guidance of an experienced professional will cause significant harm to your brand equity and your sales pipeline.
You cannot afford to entrust your 2027 revenue goals to a generic algorithm. You need a comprehensive strategy built on real audience analysis, true competitor gaps, and the actual voices of the customers who buy from you. You need a strategy that unites your internal operations with precise lead generation tactics.
