How Your Social Media Approach is like Watching a Solar EclipseAs many of you already know, Monday August 21st marks the first total solar eclipse since 1979. A total eclipse is when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun and completely blocks the sun for a period of time.

You may have never correlated an eclipse with a social media marketing strategy, but the right practices are strangely similar. Here are a few smart ways to approach both social media and watching the eclipse.

Don’t Go At Alone

When you’re watching a solar eclipse, you want to be around others who will appreciate this phenomenon as much as you do. After all, you may have to wait another forty years for the next one.

Social media has the word “social” in it for a reason. You must be consistently interacting with your audience online in order for your platforms to be successful. Having a clear strategy and smart goals are important when creating social media platforms for your business. Interacting and networking are just as important and will allow your platforms to grow at a much faster pace if you’re reaching out consistently.

Prepare Yourself

Depending on where you are on the earth, the eclipse will be visible to you at a certain time, and the total eclipse will only happen for a couple of minutes. You’ll want to know when to look up. Specific research is required, or you’ll miss the big event!

Research and planning are essential when creating a social media strategy. That’s why it’s called a strategy. Before you create any of your platforms you should know what the goals are for each of them, who your audience is, and how often you should be posting. You want to be prepared for updates and changes to social media channels and always be on top of comments or messages coming in. You know what they say, if you fail to plan then you plan to fail.

Don’t Overthink It

A lot of people think they need to have some sort of fancy Back to The Future-style goggles and a solar blocking telescope to view the eclipse. Not true. While there is eyewear available for the big event, set yourself on the grass, and look near it, but not right at it!

The same goes for social media; you don’t need to create an Oscar-worthy video to start a YouTube channel or be a professional photographer for an Instagram account. Set a clear long-term goal for your social platforms and then start creating quality content that all serves that goal.
