Google’s March 2026 Core Update: Why True Thought Leadership Always Wins

When Google announces a major “Core Update,” the most recent one documented here, my inbox typically receives a question from concerned business owners and C-Suite executives. The common anxiety is that Google is fundamentally changing the rules of the game or that “Search” as we know it is breaking.

I tell them the same thing every time: I am not worried, and you shouldn’t be either. Google isn’t changing its mission; it is simply getting better at fulfilling it. These updates aren’t designed to penalize legitimate businesses that share real value. They are designed to clear the noise—to scrub away the spammy, unhelpful, and automated content so that true thought leadership can thrive.

The Problem: The Noise of Automation

The external problem we face today is “scaled content abuse.” With the explosion of generative AI, the internet is being flooded with articles written by machines, for machines. This creates an internal problem for you as a leader: a feeling of being drowned out by competitors who are churning out low-quality “filler” at a high velocity.

Your desired prospects deserve better. You will stand out if you are delivering high-quality content, as opposed to several of your competitors greeting them with generic, AI-generated “fluff” offering no real-world expertise. Google’s core updates are the mechanism by which the search engine fights back against this inauthenticity.

Our Standard: Brand Journalism

At KWSM, our approach has always been rooted in brand journalism. Because our content team is made up of trained journalists, we don’t just “write for SEO.” We interview subject-matter experts, uncover unique insights, and tell stories that resonate with humans.

We always incorporate Google’s helpful content guidelines into our writing processes. Google is very explicit about what it rewards: content that provides a satisfying experience, demonstrates first-hand expertise, and is created primarily for people, not search engines.

When you focus on being helpful rather than just being “found,” you insulate your brand from algorithm shifts. Google’s own documentation on how search works confirms that its systems are specifically designed to find the most reliable and relevant results. If you are the most reliable source, you win.

The AI Trap: Why “Good Enough” Isn’t Enough

If you are experiencing a decline in traffic following an update, it is likely time for a gut check on your content creation process. This is the primary danger for businesses or agencies that rely too heavily on AI.

No matter how well a prompt is written, AI-generated content is fundamentally inauthentic. It lacks your lived experience, your unique perspective, and the “soul” of your leadership. Google’s systems are becoming incredibly sophisticated at detecting content that lacks E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). If your strategy relies on a machine to do the heavy lifting of “thinking,” you are building your digital presence on a foundation of sand.

The Authenticity Pivot

This emphasis on human expertise is exactly why I recently wrote about the rising SEO value of short-form video. In a world where text can be faked or automated, video remains a bastion of truth.

One of the best ways to prove to Google—and your prospects—that you are a real expert is to show your face and share your knowledge on camera. By doubling up your thought leadership—writing deep, journalistic articles and recording corresponding videos—you provide the “proof” of expertise that Google’s latest updates are looking for.

What This Means for You

If you are a KWSM client, rest assured that my team and I are already monitoring your performance. However, I always recommend that you reach out to your KWSM Digital Account Manager to see whether there has been any specific volatility in your results or to discuss how we are navigating these updates in your niche.

If you aren’t currently a client and you’ve seen a sharp decline in your search visibility, I encourage you to look critically at your content. Are you providing value that only you can provide, or are you just contributing to the noise?

I believe that quality is the only sustainable SEO strategy. In an era of automation, your humanity is your greatest competitive advantage.

If you want to audit your current strategy or understand how to align your content with Google’s latest standards, let’s look at the numbers together.
