Networking has come a long way from coffee dates and monthly meetings, especially in today’s climate. If you’re looking for a new way to connect from the safety of your own home, don’t rule out your social media channels. Consider Twitter; this platform allows you to connect with people you might not be able to reach otherwise, making it an incredibly powerful networking tool.
Before you begin reaching out to new connections, make sure your profile is a good representation of yourself or your brand. Start by picking an appropriate handle. If you’re creating an account for your business, you’ll want to choose a handle that relates to your services and is consistent with your other social media handles. Do some research; what are your competitors using, and is it successful?
Next, make sure you have a professional picture for your avatar. This is the picture your followers will see in their feed or when they click on your profile. You’ll also want to make sure the picture you choose for your header doesn’t clash or overpower your profile portrait and is consistent with your branding.
Once you reach the section with your Bio information, you’ll have to get selective. Twitter only allows 160 characters, so make it compelling. Let people know who you are, what you do and why you’re unique. People want to connect with users that share common interests, so don’t forget to use words that are targeted to your industry or passions. Finally, don’t forget to add hashtags, mentions and links to help you better connect with your target audience.
After your profile is complete, you can start following people you’d like to connect with. You may want to begin by retweeting or commenting on a few tweets that resonate with you and the industry you’re serving. Don’t come on too strong and retweet everything, it’s best to build a relationship gradually – just as you would in the “real world.” Remember, compliments and confidence go a long way!
