In the News: Instagram Gives Users Access to DMs on Desktop, Pinterest Shares New Outlets for Businesses to Get Discovered and Twitter Leaks Information About Their Users to Business Partners

With the Stay at Home Order in effect, many platforms are giving businesses the tools they need to access their consumer base. Instagram is giving users access to direct messages on their desktop computers, and Pinterest is helping businesses simplify the buying process for customers. Meanwhile, Twitter handed information about their users over to their business partners.

Instagram Launches DMs on Desktop

Although Instagram has always had direct messages on their mobile app, the company never gave users access to them on desktop computers until now. With DMs accessible on desktop, businesses will now be able to DM influencers and other brands with ease. Individuals using the new desktop feature will be able to continue to start one-on-one and group chats, read and send messages, send photos, and react to responses. However, you will still not be able to video chat through Instagram, which is a feature you can now use through DMs on the mobile app.

Pinterest Provides Businesses With Shopping Tools

As a way to help support local businesses, Pinterest has made it easier for users to shop from Pins, both on boards, and from search.

  • Shop from a board: When a user finds a board they are interested in, they will now see a ‘Shop’ tab that shows products that are either on their board or are inspired from it. Users will see a list of in-stock products based on what they’ve been saving. 
  • Shop from search: A new shop tab will appear in search to make shopping for in-stock products easier. You also are able to filter based on price and brand.
  • Shop from Pins: To help make shopping easier, Pinterest created “shop similar,” a resource that allows users to see related in-stock products when they are searching.

Twitter Gives Business Partners Insights on Users

When Twitter receives information from its users, the information is used to improve their services, to personalize the user’s Twitter experience, and for other purposes that they outline in their privacy policy. Sometimes, they even provide non-public personal information to their partners. This includes information shared with certain digital advertising platforms to help measure and optimize the effectiveness of marketing efforts on those platforms and advertisers who run mobile application advertising campaigns through Twitter.
