A Facebook advertising boycott for the month of July is gaining momentum among some major brands. Companies such as Ben & Jerry’s, Eddie Bauer, Patagonia, REI, and The North Face have all pledged to pull advertising money from Facebook and Instagram through the month of July.
The effort comes after civil rights groups launched the campaign “Stop Hate for Profit” last week. Groups like the NAACP and Anti-Defamation League asked marketers to boycott Facebook ads as an effort to hold the social media giant accountable for how its platforms are able to benefit from racism and misinformation.
As many as 100 small businesses have now joined the movement as pressure continues to build on Facebook to rethink its hands-off approach to policing harmful content. In a statement announcing its plan to join the boycott, Ben & Jerry’s posted this:
Patagonia also released a statement on Twitter that received more than 28,000 retweets in just 3 days.
At this time, it’s not clear how many companies will join the movement, how it will affect Facebook’s revenue, or what happens at the end of July. Last year, Facebook reported nearly $70 billion in revenue with more than 90 percent coming from advertising.
