Social media is vital to the success of businesses, especially small businesses. Some may consider this an exaggerated statement, but not according to a recent Pew Research Center study. The study revealed that nearly 70% of Americans are on a form of social media. To put things in perspective, only 5% of people used social media when they started tracking it in 2005. In just over ten years, social media has grown to host a major portion of America, and small businesses not active on social media are missing out.

We’ve got some tips for your business to connect with the 70% once you stop making these weak excuses:

“I Don’t Understand It”

Using social media as an individual is usually a piece of cake, but social media as a business can be tricky. Luckily, it’s not impossible to learn. The most important part of social media, just like your business, is understanding your audience so you can deliver compelling content that they can’t help but click. Social media terminology can also be complicated because there are so many terms, but once you understand basics like engagement, clicks and reach, you’re almost there. “It Doesn’t Suit My Business”

Now that’s an exaggerated statement. A specific type of social media like Facebook or Instagram may not suit your business however, there is a wide variety of platforms that appeal to various demographics. Some business owners feel that they won’t achieve social media success because they are targeting a mature audience, but this is simply not true. 79% of people between the ages of 30-49 and 61% of people between 50-64 can be found on Facebook. All it takes is a little research to figure out where your target audience is. Once you’ve done that it’s all about appeal and authenticity. Present yourself in a way that attracts your audience, and don’t forget to remain in customer service mode—even on social media.

“I’m Too Busy”

We understand. You’re too busy running your business to market on social media, and you’re not alone. You probably started a few channels and post here and there, but it’s not something that you’re able to commit to. This doesn’t mean social is not important, which is why many businesses outsource their social media. Whether you don’t have time to learn the strategic side, or you don’t have the time to execute, outsourcing can help to increase awareness of your business and attract more customers. Brands that portray the right type of personality and creativity for their audience perform very well on social, and you can have people dedicated this initiative.
