Where’s Your True Voice?

An important thing to remember on social media is that you’re always trying to connect with your audience on a deeper, more personal level.  And one way to do that easily is to simply let down your guard, and act like your natural self.

I’ll admit it: I used to be very verbose, and I tended to be very formal and wordy when it came to writing. I was too careful with my words, and every sentence was too ornate or flowery. I couldn’t help it—it was the trained writer in me! But after working in social media, I learned that my writing habits hindered me. Why?

Online, your words matter. When your writing sounds too fancy or too robotic, people will get turned off! Your audience doesn’t want to be impressed by your writing—they want to connect with you, to know that you are human. So even though you are just trying to sound professional, sometimes, this can come off as possibly condescending or negative. Informality when writing is fine, and even welcomed, on social media. Writing the way you talk produces a more conversational tone, making you more approachable online.

Of course, if you are more of a proper and formal person, you shouldn’t force yourself to be informal! What I mean is that you should always stay true to yourself on social media. Be yourself, and your personality will come through! People will see this and appreciate it.
