You’ve invested in social media for your business, and maybe you even have the “Big Four” – Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and LinkedIn. But now you’ve been hearing that Instagram is growing in popularity among the different social media channels. Should you invest in creating an Instagram account for your business? Before you commit to an extra social media platform, consider if Instagram is the right type of platform for your business. Just because it’s popular doesn’t mean you should hop on the bandwagon.

  1. If You Can Provide Beautiful Photos

The best and most popular Instagram accounts are run by those with a creative eye who invest time in taking and editing photos to look pretty. If your business has a product or service that can provide a variety of visually pleasing or entertaining photos, then Instagram can be a good fit for your brand. If you can take lifestyle photos on a regular basis of your product or service, then Instagram can benefit your business. For example, e-commerce businesses like clothing brands, food-related products, and travel-related topics perform exceedingly well on Instagram.

  1. If Your Demographic Includes Millennials

The majority of Instagram’s demographic heavily weighs in the teens and 20-somethings, or the millennial generation. There are also plenty of people who are in their 30s and 40s who use Instagram as well. According to a study by Sprout Social, 53% of Instagram users are aged 18-29.

If your brand speaks to one of these age ranges, then Instagram is the best place to reach them. While Facebook can be overwhelming for some users with its multitude of content, Instagram is a simple and eye-catching feed for young audience members to quickly scroll through. Remember, those in the younger demographic have a short attention span. Consider your target audience.

Instagram is social media’s poster child for “show don’t tell” – the story of your brand is told through the photos on your profile. Captions are important, but the photo is what initially draws in users. Learn more about how to best choose the right social media channels for your business.
