Pinterest Reports Rapid Growth and Facebook Announces Anti-Cyberbullying Campaign

You may not hear as much about Pinterest as you do the other social platforms, but Pinterest use is surging. Twitter, looking for a surge of its own, has signed a new deal to show a lot more video. Meanwhile, Facebook is taking a unique approach of jumping off social to discuss cyberbullying. These are some of the stories trending in social media this week.


The Number of Pinterest Users Surpasses 250 Million


More businesses are making Pinterest a part of their strategy for promoting their products, as they recognize a growing audience on the platform. TechCrunch recently reported that 250 million people are now using Pinterest each month, a 25 percent increase from this time last year.


Those users are not just browsing; they are taking action. Pinterest’s purchasing services and retail promotion is booming, up 115-percent in the past 12 months.


Twitter Inks New Deal For More Video


We continuously share consumers’ desire for video content, and Twitter is about to quench its audience’s thirst for watchable media. The platform has struck deals to secure hundreds of hours of live-streaming and video highlights from major media entities like Sony Music, Fox Sports Asia, and VICE.


CNBC reports that the main focus will be the Asia-Pacific region, and they will include such items as UEFA Champions League soccer, Formula One racing, and red carpet live events.


A Twitter exec told CNBC that the platform sees itself as more of a conduit to new audiences for those networks, as opposed to being a competitor to them.


According to eMarketer, nearly 2.4 billion people stream live content or watch downloadable digital content at least once a month.


Facebook to Host Events in All 50 States to Address Cyberbullying


Facebook is serious about stopping cyberbullying. It is going offline to do something about it.


The platform announced a joint anti-bullying campaign with the National PTA. The Digital Families Community Events campaign is designed to give families an opportunity to share experiences and coping strategies for dealing with bullying and cyberbullying.  The campaign will offer resources about keeping kids safe, including 200 community safety events around the US.


Topics will include: cyberbullying digital news and literacy, or discerning the legitimacy of information found online, online privacy, and being a good digital role model for children.


The first of Facebook’s Digital Families Community Events is expected in early October.
