On social media, if they can’t see you, they can’t hear you! As social media expands, so does the number of users each major platform has. By February 2018, there were over 2.13 billion users on Facebook, 800 million active Instagram users, and 330 million Twitter users. And LinkedIn, while a smaller and more specialized social media platform, is more of the same! There are currently 250 million active LinkedIn professionals looking to be seen, and if you can’t stand out in the crowd, you’ll be missing out on major visibility in your industry.

Show Off Your “Skills”

The skills you promote on your LinkedIn profile speak volumes to other users on the platform. By selecting the appropriate skills, you not only show your value to potential prospects, but you are more visible to those looking for a professional with a similar skill set. Once you have selected your first few skills, LinkedIn will generate other popular skill recommendations that it thinks might apply to you. Spend some time looking at your options here and thinking outside of the box when it comes to your capabilities listed.

LinkedIn’s “search appearance” feature provides you with more data about how you are being found on LinkedIn. Under the header section of your profile, you can find just how many times you appeared in a search that week, as well as the job titles that were searched in order to find your profile. Use this feature to learn more about how you are coming up in search and to track your visibility on the platform.

Be an Expert

One of the best ways to increase your visibility on LinkedIn is to be active on the platform. Many people spend hours creating and perfecting their profile, but then get lost in the sea of users because they are not actively engaging with their connections. Establish yourself as an expert in your industry by creating content, posting blogs, and joining discussions with other users. The more you post and engage, the more valuable LinkedIn will see you.

Focus on Your Headline and Summary

There are two places on your LinkedIn profile where you can add keywords to help increase your SEO and visibility; your headline and summary. For your headline, stray away from simply stating your current position. While your job position is important your overall professional image, it is not a searchable aspect and will not help increase your LinkedIn visibility. Instead, use the professional headline to describe your industry and position using keywords that will be familiar to other users.

You can also load up your summary with keywords that prospects might be searching. Instead of duplicating your resume here, find robust keywords that continue to show off your skills and better explain your business goals.

LinkedIn visibility is all about putting in the extra work to be seen, not sitting back and waiting to be found. By increasing your searchability, you can get in front of more potential clients, business partners, or other industry experts who are looking for a professional just like you. With the many social media channels in play today, it can be difficult to understand what you should, and shouldn’t be promoting on the professional channel. Check out the four things you should immediately remove from your LinkedIn account.
