How many digital marketers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? None — they’ve automated it.
How many digital marketers does it take to cook Gnocchi and Eggplant? — That would be 13.
The KWSM team took a break from the digital world on Friday to try something that not all of us are experts at – cooking. We headed to Tspoons in San Juan Capistrano to celebrate the holidays and engage in a little friendly competition.
If you haven’t been there, Tspoons is located in the historic downtown area directly across the street from the old Mission San Juan Capistrano. The street is lined with nostalgic buildings and popular destinations like the 1950’s bar “Swallow’s Inn.”
You’ll find Tspoons inside the Ferris Kelly Building, which dates back to the 1920s. The old brick walls are the backdrop to new stainless steel appliances. It feels like the perfect space to create memories over food and wine, and that’s just what we did.
The (very patient) cooking instructors guided us through five different recipes. Those included, Tomato Basil Bisque, Eggplant Milanese, handmade Gnocchi with Bolognese Sauce, fresh Baguettes and a Chocolate Flourless Cake. I’m full just writing about it.
After a few hours in the kitchen, we moved to a large table set for our afternoon feast. As a party of 13, we were split into four small groups while cooking. All of our dishes were labeled, which meant we were actually eating the food we prepared.
And this is where the competition part comes in. Once seated, our Tomato Bisque was ranked on its flavor. I thought my team had it; our bisque was delicious!
I was wrong.
Not only did we miss the mark for 1st place, but we also missed it for 2nd and 3rd as well. However, the real winner of the afternoon was the Eggplant Milanese. After a quick vote, we agreed it was our overall favorite.
I left Tspoons with a full stomach and five new recipes in hand.
It wasn’t until my drive home I realized, the day was about more than just cooking. It was a reminder of why it’s important to step out of your comfort zone. Taking a cooking class wasn’t something I would have picked on my own, but I really enjoyed it.
That evening, I learned more about cooking, my co-workers, and why I should always let someone else season the Tomato Bisque.
