If your business isn’t on Twitter, it may be time to jump on the bandwagon. After all, Twitter is one of the most popular social media channels in the world. If used to its full potential, a Twitter profile can be a very valuable tool for business marketing. Whether you are brand new to Twitter or you’re ready to dust off that old account, here are few ways you can increase your following and grow brand awareness on Twitter.

Fill out your profile completely.

Most Twitter users will check your profile before they decide whether to follow you. If your profile is empty or incomplete, they may disregard your account as fake or inactive. Upload a headshot or company logo for your profile picture. Bios are searchable in Twitter, so make sure to get the most out of 160 characters by including relative information about you or your company. Don’t forget to add your business’s website URL and company location.

Find existing connections on Twitter.

To give your Twitter profile a boost, find connections that you already have on other social media platforms. If you are already connected to someone on Facebook or LinkedIn, they are likely to follow you back on Twitter, too. Use the search feature to find people you know, or upload your email contact list and choose who you want to connect with. The same can be done with your LinkedIn contacts.

Tweet often.

It should come as no surprise that those who post on a consistent basis usually have more followers. The lifespan of a tweet is very short. Many of your followers won’t see some of your tweets for no other reason than they get lost in the crowd. The more often you post, the more likely people will see your posts, find your posts in search, and begin to follow you. Aim to tweet a few posts every day, but produce tweets that are useful, helpful, and informative. Use hashtags to make your tweets searchable, but don’t go overboard. One to two relevant hashtags is enough.

Be social.

When following new users, make sure to interact with one or two of their tweets. Take ten minutes to network and engage your connections on Twitter. Stream through your home feed and comment on or like other users’ posts. Find a weekly Twitter chat to participate in by searching for hashtags. If you can’t find one relative to your business, start your own chat! Twitter chats are a great way to network with like-minded individuals and grow brand awareness.

Promote your Twitter profile.

A great way to get new, targeted followers is to let your clients know that you are on Twitter. Display a Twitter decal on your storefront window. In your various advertisements, include a short blurb asking customers to find you on Twitter. Include your Twitter handle on promotional materials, event flyers, and business cards. Make sure your website has a Twitter button that links to your profile. Make it as easy as possible for your clients or customers to find you on Twitter.

If you stay active and engage with other users, you will see improvement on your Twitter account. The more often you post and interact with others, the more followers you will obtain. Remember not to be too promotional. The trick to gaining new followers is to become a valuable resource.
