A milestone this week for Twitter, the social media platform that allows you to spread your message to the world, 140 characters at a time. While some view Twitter as a major platform for pop culture fanatics, it has also become a must-operate channel for businesses. From CEOs to customer service, brands are connecting with fans in the marketplace, making sales, solving problems, and driving brand awareness.

Users send approximately 347,000 tweets every minute and Twitter has fundamentally been reimagined by users over the past decade – first with the ‘@’ for users to reply to one another, using the infamous ‘hashtag’ to connect posts to certain subject matters and deciding to ask the world, ‘what’s going on?’ in 140 characters or less.

Twitter has also revolutionized the way businesses, large or small, interface with their fans and advertise their services. For example, restaurants can use Twitter to tweet about daily specials or a brand can tweet about opportunities for their fans, like an opportunity to win a prize.

This social media channel is a platform for businesses to connect with their audience, answer their questions or concerns, retweet their comments and share the latest news that is relevant to their community.

TwitThe more businesses regularly tweet the faster they can get to know their audience. Taking the time to get to know your fans is key to understanding which tweets will most appeal to them – quotes, news updates, funny pictures, statistics, or links, as business owners you need to try different tactics. If you primarily run advertising tweets and your business isn’t seeing any results, it is because ad tweets come across as spam and that can be a major turnoff for followers.

Twitter is a balance between asking the right questions to spark intrigue and driving traffic to your website. If you need inspiration for your business, check out likeminded companies that have a large Twitter audience and see how they run their account. Also, ask people in your company who have personal accounts and see what interests them most on Twitter and why they follow certain brands.

In honor of Twitter’s tenth birthday, here are some fun Twitter facts:

-A day’s worth of Twitter posts would fill a 10-million-page book
