At KWSM: a digital marketing agency, we hold an annual Mentorship Program where we are split into mentor and mentee partners to explore a topic we want to learn more about. This is a 12 week program where we can learn to excel in a new skill.
This was my first year to participate in the mentorship program and I was beyond excited to be partnered with Stephen Wagner, KWSM’s Vice President of Operations, who has many years of SEO experience. During our time together, I learned valuable skills for how to get websites to rank higher in search engines from Stephen and was able to apply them in my role as a content creator.
The Mentorship Journey
During our first meeting, Stephen and I discussed my goals and what I was hoping to achieve. I was not very familiar with SEO, so I wanted to expand my knowledge and learn more about how SEO could improve a website landing page.
We decided the first step was for me to take some SEO courses and earn my certificates to prove what I had learned during the course. The courses were a great first step in diving deeper into SEO. After the courses, I watched helpful SEO videos on YouTube and Stephen taught me about on-site optimization of a website in order to help it rank higher in search engines.
We worked to apply what I learned to improve one of my client’s websites.
Using SEO to Improve A Website
Stephen and I optimized the website for my client, a personal injury law firm based out of Southern California, and re-wrote content for three of their practice areas pages.
Making sure my client was writing high quality content, using the proper keywords, had proper mobile optimization, and had a solid media strategy were important for ranking higher on the search engine results page (SERP).
We also looked at my client’s competitors and their domain authority (DA) to determine ways that we could stand out. It’s helpful to check other websites and how they are ranking in terms of keywords and user experience when designing an SEO strategy.
After conducting keyword research and competitor research, I came up with recommendations for additions to my client’s landing pages. These recommendations included adding more information in each section so people clicking the website will walk away with valuable knowledge.
My Takeaways from the SEO Mentorship Program
The 12-week mentorship program flew by and before I knew it, I was walking away with important information that I could apply to all my clients to help their websites appear higher in search engine rankings.
I have learned extensive SEO skills through this program, which is only one of the many reasons why I am grateful to be a part of KWSM. Although this mentorship program has come to an end, I am excited to apply what I learned in my day-to-day role at the agency and continue learning more about the digital marketing industry.
