Instagram Launches New Recommended Posts and Personalization Features

Meta is aiming to create the most customized in-app experience for Instagram users. Meeting this goal includes launching new personalization features that put content control back in the hands of users. These newest Instagram features include hiding recommended posts and quiet mode.

New Instagram Features: Hiding Recommend Posts

According to Meta, the company “plans to double the amount of recommended posts in user feeds by the end of 2023, with more than 15% of content displayed to Instagram users now coming from its AI recommendation tools.” 

This new ability to hide recommended posts using hashtags and keywords in the Don’t Suggest Posts with Certain Words settings option in the pop-up menu. This will help craft what users will see in their Discover feed. You can also access this in the Hidden Words section of Privacy settings.

Although the majority of these recommendations come to users from AI, this feature allows users to manually train the algorithm and ensure they are receiving the content they actually want to see. This Instagram feature has the potential to improve engagement with content from business accounts because their posts are being delivered to the most interested users on the app. 

New Instagram Features: Quiet Mode

Quiet mode is another brand-new Instagram feature that gives users more control over their screen time. This new mode is designed to be turned on during work and school day hours as well as late-night hours when users are sleeping. Activating this mode will turn off notifications and alert users’ closest friends they are temporarily away. The goal of this feature is to allow users to create a custom schedule that better fits their off-screen lives. 

With the launch of these new Instagram features, business owners could see a change in the times their audience is active and their overall audience activity levels. This could impact the engagement typically seen in the past on paid and organic posts. It’s ideal to monitor the changes in users’ behavior and adjust posting cadences and subject matter to align with this new activity level.
