A LinkedIn profile is the perfect channel for professionals to grow their network and showcase their resumes. Having a complete profile and an impressive resume may allow a prospect to see who you are in terms of work experience, but to really get an edge on the competition, consider asking for recommendations on your LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn recommendations give others a chance to see what it’s like working with you firsthand. They add authenticity to your resume, enhance your profile, and build your know, like, and trust factor. To help you out, we’ve compiled the best tips on how to get more recommendations on your LinkedIn profile:

Be Selective

Look back at past jobs opportunities and consider colleagues or employers who have a clear understanding of your character and work ethic. Did you work closely with anyone? Did any of your colleagues or bosses hold you in high regard? Anyone who falls into these two categories would be an ideal candidate to ask for a recommendation. On the other hand, if you didn’t perform your best at a position, or if you left a company suddenly and without giving notice, that particular boss may not be inclined to give you a recommendation. Don’t forget to take your career path into consideration! A great recommendation can highlight the position on your resume that you want to draw attention to the most.

Be Personal

It’s important to remember that even though you’re online, you’re still writing to real people who value honest communication. Instead of using the generic message LinkedIn provides, write a personal message to the person you’re requesting a recommendation from. Addressing them personally shows that you truly value their opinion and aren’t just sending out requests to the masses. Make sure to address them by name and let them know why their opinion matters to you.  Whether you’re asking a colleague who can attest to your team building skills or a manager who oversaw an important project, providing a specific reason can also help them understand what would be best to write in their recommendation.

Be Genuine

Always remember that people connect with people. When you ask someone to write you a recommendation on your LinkedIn profile, you’re essentially asking them to take time out of their day to help you out. It’s best not to ask for recommendations from colleagues if you wouldn’t feel comfortable returning the favor, so focus on asking people who you’d happily write a recommendation for as well! Chances are, if you go ahead and put in a kind word for them, they’ll be inclined to do the same.
