How Do I Shift My Business Strategy Amidst The COVID-19 Outbreak: KWSM Q&A

Mar 2020

In a time of uncertainty, it’s hard to know which way to shift when it comes to marketing your business. KWSM President Katie Wagner and Director of Operations Stephen Wagner sat down for a Q&A webinar to help address that question. KWSM is a digital marketing agency that works with more than 200 clients a year. That means many of those businesses are dealing with a unique set of obstacles. Here’s what some of them had to say.

Q: My business is centered around gatherings like trade shows and live events. How should I change my digital strategy since those events have been canceled or postponed?

A: Now is a great time to reassess and focus on your digital strategy. Think about your digital tools and how you can use them.

Consider an email campaign that’s not directly centered around the coronavirus. If your business hasn’t been directly impacted and is still running from home, try sending emails about your products and services, educate people about your brand, and what you have to offer, whether it’s now or in the future.

If you can move your business online, think about hosting a webinar. Many Doctors have turned to telemedicine. If you’re a teacher, speaker, or fitness instructor, consider moving your classes to a video chat.

Don’t forget to stay connected to your professional contacts using social media platforms like LinkedIn. It’s good to check-in and keep people updated on any significant changes.

Q: If you have a business in the travel and tourism sector, what should you say to potential customers at this time?

A: Even though people aren’t traveling as much, there are people like doctors and experts who have to continue traveling at this time. Think about who’s still in need of your services and how you can connect with them.

Q: Should I send my customers a response about COVID-19?

A: You should assess your business first. If you’re a restaurant or organization that’s highly affected, then yes. If not, then consider holding off. Let people know you’re working from home but that your services are still operational. With so many COVID-19 related emails right now, it can feel disingenuous if it’s not crucial.

Q: Should I put a hold on marketing right now?

A: There is no right or wrong answer; you have to look at your individual needs. If your business is not being hurt, it’s not a good time to cut things cold turkey. You will not make up the traction in the future. Remember, digital marketing relies on consistency.

It is important to re-evaluate your ads and social media posts to make sure they’re still appropriate. You do not want to be posting about vacations or large events.
