Whether you’re just getting started on social media or you’ve been active on it for a while, sooner or later you’re going to expect to see results. For many business owners and brands, results may translate to seeing an increase in followers. But while the number of followers can be a great way to measure your success on social media, having a quality following doesn’t always mean big numbers.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Having a large amount of followers looks great at first glance. It shows profile visitors that many other social media users are interested in your brand. To a lot of people, a large follower count equates to success on social media. However, bigger isn’t always better when it comes to your following. If you have a large following, but only receive low numbers of engagement or likes, comments, and shares on your posts, your following is just that, a large number. A high-quality following, no matter the size, will be actively engaging with your content. This proves they’re genuinely interested in what you’re sharing, which makes them authentic followers of your brand.

Knowing Your Target Audience

What’s wrong with this picture: You own a swimwear company that sells styles intended for young women, but the majority of your followers are male. While your engagement may be through the roof, the majority of these followers are unlikely to make a purchase from your company. Engagement is always welcome, of course! That’s not the problem here. The problem is, the majority of your followers are not members of your target audience. To reach your target audience, you’ll need to be networking with social media users who fit into the demographic you’re targeting and who may convert into customers over time. While engagement is key to the success of your online presence, it isn’t everything! Interacting with your target audience can help grow a quality following on social media.

Quality Over Quantity

If you’re looking for results, always remember the golden rule for measuring success with your followers: Quality Over Quantity. It’s ultimately better to have 50 actively engaged followers than 50,000 inactive followers. This is why buying followers doesn’t pay off the way many hope it will! If you network with your target audience and focus on making genuine connections, you will be right on track to achieving a true quality following on your social channels.
