It’s a new twist to Facebook’s launch into the ever growing world of video chatting. The Social Network has now added the capacity for Instagram users to get in on the action from their Instagram Direct inbox.
In May, Facebook launched a new feature called “Messenger Rooms” as an alternative to the popular Zoom app, and now Instagram users can also take advantage of this new feature.
Here’s how it works: Messenger Rooms are still hosted through Messenger (on Facebook) — so while you can create a room within Instagram, you’ll still have to switch to Messenger to engage in the video chat. Another important note: the creator of the room has to have a Facebook account linked to their Instagram account.
Some of the benefits of using Messenger Rooms via Instagram include the ability to add up to 50 people in a single chat room, no time limits (unlike Zoom’s 40 minutes free restriction), and it’s relatively easy to send or receive an invite from the Instagram app.
Here’s how to set up Messenger Room on Instagram:
- Open the Instagram app.
- Tap the paper airplane icon in the upper right corner.
- Tap the video icon in the upper right corner.
- Tap “Create a room” and give it a name.
- Invite your friends.
- Tap “Join room” and agree to leave the Instagram app for Messenger.
In May, Google also rolled out an expanded version of “Google Meet.” Originally built for business meetings, the tech giant made its video chat platform free and available to everyone. Anyone who has a Gmail account can sign up and start a video call at meet.google.com.
