The Importance of Diversifying Your Content on Social Media

Social media is a multi-faceted, ultra-engaging medium for communication. As a business, you’d be crazy not to take advantage of it when communicating with existing or potential clients and customers. Many businesses are already utilizing social media, but not all of them are utilizing it well. Simply typing out a status update is not going to garner any interest or engagement. A truly effective social media presence is diversified, full of images, text, articles, and videos. Here are some reasons why:

Search results are blended. Search engines like Google and Bing use a “blended search” approach in which their search results not only display websites, but also videos, images, news stories, maps and tweets from Twitter. The more diverse, steady,  and engaging content you put out there, the more likely you are to catch someone’s eye when they search for your business on a search engine.

Facebook Edgerank. Did you know that Facebook filters posts that it thinks are boring? Using an algorithm that predicts user engagement, Facebook will actually “choose” which of your posts show up on the Newsfeed (the main home page) of your fans. For example, photos and videos are ranked as higher than simple text and links and are more likely to end up on the Newsfeed.

People are easily bored. It’s a fact. Consumers have such a high volume of information thrown at them each day that anything monotonous or continually plain gets passed over and immediately forgotten about. By posting engaging and diverse types of content, you are more likely to get people to stop and engage with your business page.

Nobody likes to be boring. And nobody likes to get passed over. So, go on- diversify and thrive!
