People from all around the world used social media to collectively experience this year’s most important events, milestones, and trends – from pop culture to cultural movements. As 2017 comes to a close, it only seems appropriate to take a look back at the major moments dominating social media and seeing how they stack up.

Facebook

Facebook’s biggest topics this year included human rights, tragedies, and natural disasters. The most globally talked about topic was International Women’s Day, with people across the world talking, sharing, and posting in celebration of women and related issues. On that topic, the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. was the biggest Facebook Event in 2017.

We also saw Facebook establish itself not just as a social network, but also as a support network this year. The earthquake in Mexico drove the highest number of total interactions within Crisis Response on Facebook. Hurricane Harvey was the biggest Facebook fundraising effort for a single crisis, raising more than $20 million. The One Love Manchester benefit concert, which raised money for those affected by the Manchester terror attack was the most viewed video and live broadcast in 2017.

Instagram

Unsurprisingly, celebrities dominated Instagram this year. The most liked post of 2017 was Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement. In fact, all of the top 10 most liked posts came from three users: Beyonce, Selena Gomez, and Cristiano Ronaldo. The most popular hashtag for the second year in a row was #love. As for most Instagrammed locations? Disneyland, Anaheim and Times Square and Central Park in New York City.

Twitter

The most popular re-tweeted tweet of 2017 was Carter Wilkerson’s campaign to get free chicken nuggets from Wendy’s. Not only did it top the charts for 2017, it even surpassed Ellen DeGeneres’ famous Oscar’s selfie! The most liked tweet came from former President Obama, while current President Trump was the most tweeted about world leader. Twitter’s most popular Moments came from NASA’s discovery of seven new planets and Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement.
