Let’s face it: planning an event can be a handful. From the guest list and the vendors to the decorations and small details – there’s a lot to think about. Sometimes, making sure the event is properly promoted to get people in the door is an afterthought. That’s where social media can come into play – and it doesn’t have to cause you extra stress or cost you a dime!

Whether you’re planning a small local gathering or a large conference, social media can be used to get the word out in a powerful way. With several channels to choose from, there are a number of ways you can use social media to promote your next event.

Make a Video

Video is a powerful way to make an impact and get your message across in a personal way. It also increases the chances of people sharing your content with their friends. The bonus? Once you host it on YouTube. You can share the video virtually anywhere. You can post it on Facebook, pin it on Pinterest, tweet it on Twitter and even embed it in your blog. Video is a great tool to reach your audience and get them excited about your upcoming event.

Create a Twitter Hashtag

A specialized hashtag for your event can enhance social buzz, increase participation and even boost attendance. When creating your Twitter hashtag, try to keep it relevant, unique, short, and sweet. Make sure to use it in every tweet that relates to your upcoming event and encourage people who are attending to use it as well.

Announce a Giveaway in your Blog

Everyone’s time is precious, so why not make it worth their while to attend your event with a giveaway? You can give away your products or services or something related to your business or industry. Do you own an interior design firm? Give away an IKEA gift card. It doesn’t have to be expensive – just a little something to entice people to attend with the possibility of winning a great prize! You can promote the giveaway in a blog post leading up to the event and then share the blog on all your social media channels, too. This will add another dimension to your promotion and drive more traffic to your website.

It’s important to note that the type event and your industry may help you decide which social media channels will be most effective. Above all else, you need to know where your target audience can be found online. This way, you target your demographic and get the right people in the door.
