I do enjoy watching some celebrities. The entertainment that they make can be enjoyable to watch or listen to. However I don’t follow many celebrities on social media because it seems that they whine over small and trivial things that the common folk have to deal with daily.
For some reason Southwest Airlines has the recipient of a couple celebrities because of the way they were treated on a flight. I can’t think of any other company that has been criticized on social media by some many celebrities so much.
Last year Kevin Smith had a point when he tweeted, “Dear @SouthwestAir I know I’m fat, but was (the) captain really justified in throwing me off a flight for which I was already seated?” If Mr. Smith was indeed so large that he required two seats, then that issue should have been caught at the gate and not taken off the plane once he was seated.
Instead, Southwest Airlines handled it poorly which may have set precedent for celebrities tweeting about the business.
Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong was kicked off of a Southwest plane because he wouldn’t pull his pants up. Apparently his pants were halfway down his butt and he refused to pull them up.
Speaking as a passenger, I’m glad that they kicked him off the plane. I don’t want to see anybody walking around with their pants barely on, regardless of who they are, even a famous rock star.
Recently Leisha Hailey was kicked off a Southwest plane. Initially she tweeted that she was kicked off of the plane because she kissed her girlfriend and called for a boycott of the airline. The couple defended the kiss and said that it was modest. However, when an employee warned them about it, they became loud and started cursing.
They were then removed from the plane, which was already at its destination. Southwest Airlines CEO defended the company’s action and has reminded the gay community on all of the GLBT outreach the company has done. Southwest Airlines is the official airline of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Hailey is still kicking up a twitter tempest, but it doesn’t look like she’s gaining much sympathy in the press.
Back before social media, way back, when Basic Instinct was released the lesbian community was protesting the movie. The movie’s main character was a lesbian, she was also a killer! The lesbian community was protesting the fact that people might think that all lesbians were killers, or something like that.
That Basic Instinct protest seems really silly now. It’s quite similar to the twitter storms being caused by some other celebrities, isn’t it?
