I’m a bit late to the game, but turntable.fm is awesome! For all you audiophiles out there itching to discover new music or to simply satisfy your aural senses, turntable.fm is for you.  But, turntable.fm is unlike other music sharing apps like Pandora or Grooveshark or Soundtracking—instead, it turns listening to music into a full-blown interactive and social experience.

Log into turntable.fm using your Facebook account and you’ll be greeted with an array of “rooms”, each designated with a different genre of music. Take your pick, and you’ll then be transported into the room. Depending on its popularity, you’ll see a number (up to five) “DJ’s” lined up at the front of the room, each taking their turns “spinning” tracks. As part of the crowd, you and other users, depicted as a funky alien cartoon characters, have the power to rate the track on a scale of lame to awesome.  Or, if you’re so inclined to, you can hop onto the stage yourself, and take a stab at sharing your own tracks (show them how it’s really done!).

Turntable.fm recently released an iPhone app too, which means you can take this experience mobile.  The best thing about turntable.fm is that it can be as personal as you want it to be– You can choose to chill out in a “room” and let turntable.fm run in the background as you do your own work , mingle anonymously with strangers across different “rooms” and discover new music, or you and your friends can create your own room and each take turns DJing at a get-together or party using your iPhones.

Turntable.fm is fun and addictive, and turns listening to music into a whole different experience.  If you haven’t tried it yet, go now! But don’t blame me if you get sucked in for hours at a time…
