YouTube has announced that it will be demonstrating high-definition video streams at the Consumer Electronics Show next week, thanks to the relatively new Google video codec VP9. The new format is advantageous for YouTube and other video streaming sites because it allows them to transmit high-definition, 4K quality streams without slowing down your network. One anticipated effect is that you’ll experience a lot less buffering while watching online video. Google is working hard to ensure that VP9 enjoys broad adoption, and the demo partners include Sony, Panasonic, and LG, who will show off the the high-def streams on 4K televisions at their CES booths. The same service you’ve been using with your smartphone for several months is hitting the desktop world this week with Google+ Auto Backup. This software ships – strangely enough – with the newest version of Picasa, uploading your photos automatically from a certain directory to your Google+ social networking account. This service works with photos that are 2048pixels on their longest end unless you’d like to devote Google Drive space to the effort. More U.S. adults use LinkedIn and Pinterest than Twitter, but that website attracts a greater proportion of blacks and young adults than do its social media peers, a Pew Research Center study released on Monday showed. Photo pin-up site Pinterest spiked in popularity over the past year, according to the survey, a poll of 1,445 Internet users aged 18 and older. About 21 percent of respondents said they employ the service, up sharply from 15 percent in a similar survey conducted a year ago. More on this story here.
